Anil Sharma has responded to Ameesha Patel’s allegations regarding changes made to the climax of Gadar 2, asserting that his primary responsibility lies with the film’s overall success. The friction between the actor and the filmmaker has been apparent since the release of their 2023 movie, which began when Patel expressed concerns about her character’s portrayal.
Anil Sharma on Ameesha Patel’s remarks
In an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Sharma addressed Patel’s remarks. When it was pointed out that she views the Gadar brand as centred around her character Sakina, along with Sunny Deol’s Tara Singh and Utkarsh Sharma’s Charanjeet—while suggesting his role was diminished—Sharma remarked, “Unke mann mein jo hai unhe kehne do. Har insaan apni baat rakhne ke liye free hai. Unko lagta hai aisa hai toh aisa hai. Main keechad mein patthar nahi fekta” (Let them say whatever is in their heart. Everyone is free to express their opinion. If they feel that way, then so be it. I don’t throw stones in the mud).
Sharma emphasized that he regards Patel as family, recalling how she frequently visited his home when she was new to the industry. He acknowledged her hard work, noting how she would spend hours with him preparing for her role. While he recognized her successful career trajectory, he mentioned that coming from a wealthy family can sometimes lend a certain moodiness, stating she possesses a somewhat “moody nature.”
Anil Sharma on Ameesha’s attitude
When asked if that implied she had an attitude, Sharma clarified, “She comes from a wealthy background. Whenever she came for rehearsals, she wore a solitaire ring and arrived in a Rs 1 crore Mercedes, a chauffeur-driven car. She worked incredibly hard to embody Sakina, and she always had a certain aura. Girls from affluent families often carry a distinct presence. However, she is also very soft-spoken and well-mannered.” He added that her demeanor was a key factor in choosing her for the role, as Sakina is depicted as the daughter of a wealthy man in the story.
Regarding Patel’s claims of unauthorized changes to the film’s climax, Sharma stated that any adjustments he made were for valid reasons aimed at enhancing the overall film. He emphasized that, as a director, his commitment is to the film itself rather than any individual actor. He explained, “If a film succeeds, everyone benefits, but if it fails, the director takes all the blame. Had Gadar 2 not performed well, all criticism would have been directed at me.”
Patel had previously accused Sharma’s production house of failing to pay her dues. In a recent interview with the YouTube channel Jarp, she reiterated her concerns about changes to the film’s climax without her consent and indicated she would only consider participating in Gadar 3 if Sakina played a significant role alongside Tara Singh, similar to her character’s involvement in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
About Gadar
Despite the controversy, Gadar 2 has achieved impressive box office success, breaking multiple records and grossing Rs 686 crore globally. The film, featuring Ameesha Patel as Sakina, Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, and Utkarsh Sharma as Charanjeet, is a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
